We have long known that values shape the character of the organization. We experience the value of "service" when a flight attendant goes out of his or her way to share their enthusiasm and joy with us (Southwest Airlines, Dallas, Texas), when a company surprises us by not charging for repairing an item out of warranty (United Sailing Technologies, Waunakee, Wisconsin) or takes back on an item they don't even sell (Nordstrom, Seattle, Washington).

Organizations and schools can teach skills and technology but they can't teach courtesy, care, respect, emotional intelligence, generosity, creativity, integrity, responsibility, fairness, ethics, and enthusiasm. These are values the organization needs to discover, nourish and replenish. These and other values make for great organizations providing superior customer service and they are capable of changing on the dime.

By learning to categorize values we have opened the doors to understanding if our organizations have the right kind of values that drive us toward greatness.

Understanding both the current, espoused and desired values help us to design change strategies that will accomplish the results you want.

Virtually all values can be coded into one of seven values categories.

The seven values categories are: Society, Community, Organization Cohesion, Transformation, Self-esteem, Relationship and Survival values.

Analyzing the allocation patterns and frequency determines what kind of organization and behavior we have and what kind of organization we can expect to achieve under varying circumstances.
